If Snapchat became a real video game platform? However, it seems that what is looming: according to the British blog Cheddar, Snap Inc. is about to finally unveil its Cognac project around video games available directly in the application. The new service, says Cheddar, "will offer a handful of games from third-party developers designed to work specifically in the Snapchat app." The set must be presented at the first "summit" organized by Snap Inc. for its developers on April 4th. The invitation card would have the slogan "Less Talk. More Play. ("Less blah-blah, more games," ed.)
Snapchat is expected to announce a video game service on April 4, 2019
Snap Inc should take the opportunity to reveal the fruits of its acquisitions in the video games sector, and perhaps synergies with the Chinese Tencent one of the leader in mobile video games and above all owner of 10% of the shares of the firm - although this remains to be confirmed. Snap Inc bought in 2018 the Australian studio Prettygreat (for an amount of $ 8.6 million), which is due in particular the indestructible Fruit Ninja. The firm also acquired the startup PlayCanvas the same year, for an unknown amount. The firm has been going for some time to move in this direction - we have already seen the appearance of games in augmented reality.
But now it seems that the intention of the firm is to go beyond, and make Snapchat no longer a simple social network but a real entertainment platform. Besides video games, new original video content should also be announced. This strategy could put the application back into the race, while user growth stagnates amidst particularly aggressive competition, both because of Facebook adopting similar features in its applications, as the emergence of new social networks like Tik Tok.
