As the US exit approaches, Samsung has entrusted a handful of Galaxy Fold to some media. Unfortunately, despite some rather positive first feedback, some testers quickly noticed several problems with the folding screen of the smartphone. Some copies are apparently defective.
Galaxy Fold: the foldable screen is having problems
After 24 hours of use, Dieter Bohn, journalist at The Verge, noticed the appearance of a bump under the foldable screen. This hump was quickly aggravated and a perpendicular white line now strikes the screen of the smartphone. "What's even more disturbing is that this bulge ends up pressing the screen and breaking it," says the tester, who was quick to return his copy to Samsung.
Same story on the side of Mark Gurman, tester at Bloomberg. "The screen of my Galaxy Fold test is completely broken and unusable," says the reporter on Twitter. On the shared photos, we realize that half of the folding screen is completely out of order. In addition, thick marks appeared on the surface of the slab. For his part, Steve Kovach of CNBC ensures that the left side of the smartphone keeps flashing after 24 hours of testing. Marques Brownlee, famous YouTuber, abounds in the same direction. However, the videographer says he appreciates Samsung's risk-taking. "Almost no one should really buy it. But that does not mean that you do not have to build it, "says the YouTuber.
Faced with these reactions, Samsung said that it is important not to remove the protection screen installed by default. "Some testers reported having removed the top layer of the screen, which had damaged the slab. The Galaxy Fold's main screen has a top protective layer, which is part of the structure designed to protect it from unwanted scratches. Removing the protective layer or adding adhesives to the main screen may damage it. We will ensure that this information is clearly passed on to our customers, "says Samsung.
Some of the testers mentioned above have confirmed that they have removed the plastic. "The smartphone comes with a protective film. Samsung says you're not supposed to take it off. I removed it, I was not aware that I should not have (consumers will be in the same case). It seemed removable in the left corner, so I removed it. I think it contributed to the problem, "says Mark Gurman on Twitter. Apparently, the warning is not present on the boxes provided to journalists. Brands Brownlee also confirms to have removed the protection.
Galaxy Fold: bugs in shambles, Samsung launches an investigation
Nevertheless, not all the problems are attributable to this layer of protection, supposed to be invisible to the users. Dieter Bohn and Steve Kovach claim not to have touched this film. So that's only part of the problem. "We have never removed this protection and the smartphone has nevertheless given up," says CNBC.
"A limited number of Galaxy Fold copies have been provided to the media for review. We have received some reports regarding the main display on the samples provided. We will thoroughly inspect these devices to determine the cause of the problem, "says the manufacturer. It is recalled that the concerns encountered concern only a handful of testers.
Nevertheless, the brand has decided not to postpone the release of the Galaxy Fold in the United States, report our colleagues from the Wall Street Journal. The foldable smartphone will be on sale from April 26th. The Galaxy Fold will then be marketed in Europe from 3 May 2019 at a price of $ 2000.
