Since the launch of the first version of Nvidia Shield TV in 2015, the box that also serves as a console has not changed much despite an update in 2017. This version presents a more compact case and is accompanied by a new controller and a new remote control. Hardware level, the device always incorporates the aging chip Nvidia Tegra X1, although it remains performing in 2019.
While digging into the latest public source code of Nvidia Shield TV, a developer has identified two references to new products with the code names "stormcaster" and "Friday," as explained by the site XDA Developers. For now, we do not have much information about these two devices, but by digging more into the source code, the developer discovered that the first (stomcaster) corresponded to a HID Bluetooth controller with a USB input and the second to a Bluetooth remote.
As a reminder, the controller and remote control of the 2015 Nvidia SHIELD TV were codenamed "blake" and "jarvis", respectively. For the 2017 version of the box, the code names were "thunderstrike" and "popper". It therefore seems clear that the new codes refer to brand new accessories.
Contacted by XDA, Nvidia confirms these codes and specifies that it is "quite common that references appear in source codes even if these concepts often end not not going into production". The mark also refused to comment on the accessories to which these codes correspond.
It goes without saying that if a new controller and a new remote control were to be created, it would not be for the current versions of the box. It is therefore likely that the brand is preparing a brand new Nvidia Shield TV which we are curious to know the developments. We will certainly know more in the weeks to come.
