Gambel used the information security tactic known as "social engineering" to manipulate call centers and help desks for information, which was then used to access different accounts. In another case, the Bureau of the FBI's help fooled them into believing that it was Mark Guilliano, the former deputy director of the agency. Similarly, Gamble managed to access the home network of former Homeland Security Secretary J. Johnson. He was able to listen to Johnson's voice messages and harass his wife.
Other victims include former Obama administration officials, including US National Security Vice President Avril Haines, National Intelligence Director James Clapper and Fona Weirton, executive director of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.
