How to solve Windows Update Error 8024402F on Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit?

I had the same problem with Windows Updates on 2 of my home machines, both running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. One of the two machines is a new installation, the other has run Windows Update in the past, but does not work anymore.

Windows Update Error 8024402F

When I manually check for updates using Control Panel, I have error code 8024402F
 Windows update error code 8024402F
I followed the link for "Getting help with this error", which features several articles in Windows Help and Support, none of which are for this specific error code. Help and general googling, I tried:

-Verification of connectivity on the Internet. Most of the help suggests that this error is caused by a general problem of Internet connectivity. But if you read this, my connection works well.
-Temporarily disable the antivirus and attempt to run Windows Update. It did not help (I'm running AVG for free)
-Run Control Panel -> Troubleshooting -> Security Systems -> Repair Issues with Windows Update. That said he detected and solved problems, but did not help.
Results of updating Windows Update

Updated using IE (as I had used in XP). Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ redirect me to http://test.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx for which IE displays a "connection problem" (ie -d. The inaccessible site).
Internet Explorer Windows Update is not accessible
I had the same problem for 24 hours now, so surely have the Windows Update servers not been completely disabled? A quick check on Twitter shows no global uproar about the unavailable Windows update, so is it me? I'm based in the UK, but I find that the URL http://test.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/vistadefault.aspx is also unavailable using my server's '' wget '' Web in Chicago.

Edit 2: Microsoft Support Suggestions:

Configure the connection to automatically obtain an IP address

1-Click "Start," enter "NCPA.CPL" (without quotes) to start the search bar and press "Enter."
2-Right-click on the network connection and click on "Properties". If you are prompted for a password or administrator confirmation, enter the password or provide confirmation.
3-Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP / IPv6)" and click "Properties."
4-Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain the DNS server address automatically".
5-Click on "OK".
6-Click to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" and click "Properties."
7-Check "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain the DNS server address automatically".
8-Click on "OK".
9-Restart the computer.

I tried it and IPv4 and v6 were already tuned to these settings, restarted anyway, an error is still there. I then sent my system information and the WindowsUpdate.log file to Microsoft, sorry, but I do not publish their content here.

Resolved.

I did not hear about Microsoft Support since they sent me my log files, but I had time to look at myself. Here is a relevant excerpt:

Note the failure to download http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/common/20
09/06/2803268_2cf7737e73bd31ae709b14a95c8d2ecb7eccfbf3.cab.

I tried to download this CAB file from a browser, which did not work. I then tried wget (in cygwin) that did not work and reported "Connection reset by peer". I also had the same problem downloading the CAB file from Linux machines on my home network, so it was not a problem with the Windows machines themselves.

To cut a long story, I finally found the problem on my router, which runs DD-WRT.

Apparently, I must have activated the "Filter ActiveX" option about a month ago and I forgot that I did it.

Enter the description of the image here

Given security issues with ActiveX, this sounds like a sensible option to activate, but by reading the help ... not so much!

Filtrer les blocs ActiveX requêtes HTTP contenant une URL se terminant par ".ocx" ou ".cab".

Yes ... it would certainly cause problems! Reducing this and applying the settings to the router has put the problem on both Windows machines, as you expect.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions, I hope this is helpful for someone else.

Access Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, Local Area Network (LAN).

Settings: If set to "Automatically detect settings", change it to "Proxy Server" (my Windows 7 machine indicates port 80).

Then try Windows Update, it should work now.

If your machine is set to "proxy server", go to "auto detect settings" and try again.

I was able to solve this problem by going from "Obtain DNS server address automatically" to "Use the following DNS server addresses" and entering "8.8.8.8" and "8.8.4.4". These are Google's public DNS servers: https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

Looks like a corrupt update repository. Try that:

Start -> Services.msc

Stop the "Background Intelligent Transfer" and "Windows Update" services.

Start -> Cmd ('as administrator')

rd% systemroot% \ softwaredistribution / s

Return to services and start the Windows Update service.

Try the updates again.

Click on your time and date (bottom right). A window should appear, click on the link 'change the date and time settings'. In the Date and Time window, click the Internet tab, click the Change Settings button, then click the "Update Now" button, then click OK and exit Windows and now try your Windows update.

A couple of things - You no longer use IE to make updates in Windows 7 (and Vista?), Actually, I do not think the "correct" URL is http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com / I think it's http: //update.microsoft.com and just sends you to a page saying, "Hey, you can not use it anymore!" ... but that's not the case and I'm wandering (a lot).

I do not know how much information you want to publish, but one place I'd like to start is from your type of Windows box:
ipconfig /all

And check the exit for something strange. Some time ago, I had a client who was having trouble getting Windows updates, revealed someone hacked / disturbed with his router and changed the DNS settings.

What updates are you trying to install? I know that SP1 has a "problem" with dual boot systems and some systems that do not have a system partition (but are easy to repair).

I recommend reading this article and follow step by step (including tools). I was not able to solve the problem by any of the other answers from this thread until I read the article.

How to troubleshoot connection issues with Windows Update or Microsoft Update

The article includes a list of login error code, download links to tools, CMD commands, and so on. for Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 8.1. It's really complete. I was able to solve my problem with him.

I was struck by this one. This happened right after I made a HotFix installation (patch that did not say anything about restarting ...)

The problem was fixed simply by rebooting the system and making sure my VPN was enabled.

Now that the firewall configuration is not serious if you simply run Linux!

Well, disabling the IP6 in the network connection properties worked for me. I hope it will do you too!

I had a very similar problem documented here and all the possible solutions listed in this question were not working.

It turned out that the problem was the .NET Framework 4 client profile and that replacing the .NET Framework 4.5 made the Windows Update error disappear.
