On Thursday, March 28, 2019, Apple filed a patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office entitled "Submersible Electronic Devices with Imaging Features," report our fellow Apple Insider. The diagrams describe a device that can detect if the iPhone has been immersed in water.
And if the iPhone 11 could take pictures under water?
Once the presence of water has been detected, sensors will determine what changes to make to the photos that will be taken. For that, they will analyze the pressure of the water, its clarity, the depth to which the iPhone is, and the distance between the subject and the objective. Apple is also exploring the idea of incorporating an ambient light sensor to determine the amount of light absorbed by the water.
Once this data has been collected and processed, the iPhone will automatically correct the picture taken accordingly. For example, algorithms doped with artificial intelligence will change the color of the photo or the exposure to erase the defects that appear due to water. This process is expected to take only a few seconds. There is a similar logic in smartphones capable of recognizing a scene or a subject, such as the Huawei Mate 20 for example.
For now, there is no indication that Apple wants to use this patent for the iPhone 11 or if it reserves it for a future generation of smartphones. Anyway, the iPhone 11 would in any case equipped with a triple square sensor Huawei Mate 20.
