Tesla S and X Model: soon new engines to boost autonomy

The Tesla Model S and X will soon receive new electric motors based on the same technology as those present on the Model 3. The goal: a more efficient energy consumption and therefore greater autonomy. A gain of several tens of kilometers is expected.

Tesla is preparing new engines to equip its Model S and Model X, says Electrek. References to these new engines have already been identified in recent software updates for these two vehicles.

Tesla will be inspired by Model 3 for the new Model S and X engines

Tesla would opt for permanent magnet motors, a technology that has already proven itself on the Model 3. The main advantage of this type of engines compared to the induction motors that equip the Model S and X is the gain in autonomy brought , one of the highlights of the Model 3 which displays 544 kilometers of electric autonomy (WLTP) with a battery capacity of 75 kWh.

The difference in consumption is particularly in the city or in traffic jams, when the car is regularly idling. This change of engines could save tens of extra kilometers to the Model S and X, which are currently slightly better than the Model 3 with a much larger battery.

Tesla's timetable for the arrival of these new engines is not yet known. Electrek announces that this could happen "very soon" according to sources close to the file. This could help boost sales of the Model S and X, which collapsed in the first half of 2019, the Tesla Model 3 to $ 35,000 and the official announcement of Model Y is probably no stranger.
